After our day traveling to the Dead Sea in Jordan and visiting some of those incredible historical sites along the way, we returned to Petra as the sun set.

This was perfect timing because this evening, we had already booked tickets to the ancient lost city of Petra so that everything would be lit up that night.

There will also be a musical performance so it was all about not just looking good, but sounding great.

Now it’s important to note that this doesn’t happen everyday so you need to plan ahead if this is something to do while you’re in Petra.

It is also highly recommended to book tickets in advance so that you can guarantee your entry.

Now I know I already covered it in my first post when we visited Petra during the day, but I have to remind you again, the walk from the entrance of Petra to the Treasury – where the whole exhibition will be, is really quite. long

During the day, you can use horses and carts to get around (we didn’t; we just walked the whole thing because even walking there is pretty impressive) but at night, if you don’t have the option of horses and carts you won’t want to walk.

Also, it’s not particularly well-lit – it has lanterns on the floor, which, while looking awesome, don’t provide enough lighting to properly navigate the uneven terrain.

If you are not the most steady on your feet our advice is to walk slowly and carefully and wear sturdy walking shoes.

We didn’t do any of this because we really wanted to be one of the first to get there and see (and photograph) the flood before everyone else did.

With that in mind, we arrived at the door 30 minutes early, only to find a huge queue already waiting ahead of us.

We then did the next best thing which was to powerwalk the whole thing and honestly, at some points, I felt almost certain that I was just going to mess up.

Luckily, that didn’t happen, and although it seemed almost impossible at first, we somehow managed to be one of the first to reach the Treasury, hence, why these photos exist.😄😄

Now regarding the performance, I had read beforehand that some people didn’t like it (I think it had mixed reviews overall) but honestly, I think it was weird.

I guess it’s a matter of not showing up with wild expectations and instead letting things be what they are.

The whole place looked absolutely amazing.

The artists sang and played their instruments.

It was all exactly what they said it was going to be.

The next day, we decided to have a little lie-in and start our day a little later.

The last few days have been like 5:30am/6am starts so starting our day at 9am felt like a very welcome treat.

We will visit Petra again in the afternoon and find a viewpoint that we have seen so many photos and videos of but didn’t quite know how to find.

We thought we would get a guide to take us there, but in the interim, we also heard about a place called Little Petra and organized a taxi to take us there.

Little Petra, as the name suggests, is like a mini version of Petra, but no less impressive.

It doesn’t attract anywhere near the same number of visitors, but thanks to that, it’s free to visit.

And so we started exploring every nook and cranny of Little Petra.

For what it’s worth though, you can do this in about 2 hours, so, in some ways, you have no excuse not to visit. 😉

After walking to the other end of the valley where it is, we scaled some rocks to get a better look at the area and decided to call it an afternoon and go get lunch.

However on our way back we were distracted by locals who had a makeshift coffee shop in the ruins here and we decided to stay a little longer to chat with them over coffee.

Stopping for a chat with them really turned out to be one of our favorite parts of our trip here.

Next, it was time to head to Petra and one way to do this is to walk back to the monastery, but honestly, in this heat and with no idea where we would go (or how long it would take). We just decided to take a taxi through the front entrance instead of taking us back to Petra.

We’ll share all the details of that view here in our next post (and why you shouldn’t try to find a view).
