If Fiji is on your bucket list, there may soon be a new way to get there.

Fiji Airways Plans filed Thursday to launch a new nonstop flight from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Nadi International Airport (NAN) in Fiji. The carrier applied for permission from the US Department of Transportation, which must first approve the new route before Fiji Airways can begin service.

As part of the filing, the airline said it will deploy 334-seat Airbus A350-900 jets to Dallas. Fiji’s A350 is a competitive business-class product arranged in nine rows in a 1-2-1 reverse herringbone configuration.

Every business-class traveler will enjoy direct aisle access, as well as 17-inch TV screens, power outlets and USB ports.

Fiji’s A350s also feature 301 economy seats, 39 of which offer extra legroom.

The airline will “operate three weekly flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, commencing as soon as all necessary government approvals are received,” the filing reads.

If Fiji gets approval to operate the new DFW route, it will become the carrier’s longest flight yet. At 6,625 miles, the Dallas-to-Nady route is 760 miles long, making it the airline’s current longest route to Vancouver. (The flight will take about 13 hours, but Fiji has not yet shared proposed departure and arrival times.) Additionally, Dallas will become the airline’s fourth US destination, joining Honolulu, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Fiji’s planned expansion comes just days after the airline announced it would adopt American’s AAdvantage loyalty program as its own. Travelers will be able to earn and redeem AAdvantage miles on all flights to Fiji and also enjoy reciprocal loyalty benefits for elite members. It’s also possible that American could introduce reciprocal systemwide upgrade redemptions on Fiji flights.

In addition to the AAdvantage news, Fiji was recently approved to become the newest member of the Oneworld airline alliance, of which American is a founding member, through 2025.

As the flag carrier of Fiji, Fiji Airways’ main mission is to promote tourism in the South Pacific archipelago. With the new DFW route, travelers will be able to book hundreds of one-stop itineraries to Fiji from points across the US, increasing the appeal of a trip to Fiji for many US-based travelers. This is especially true for fliers based on the East Coast, who currently need to take a transcon flight to connect to nonstop routes from the US to Fiji.

Furthermore, Fiji Airways has historically used its strategic location in the South Pacific to offer attractive fares beyond Nadi for connections to nearby destinations including Australia and New Zealand. This new route could potentially lead to lower fares on major transpacific travel routes.

Of course, we’ll have to wait to see what the Department of Transportation rules are — TPG will keep you posted on the latest as we get more details.
