A number of American Express cards offer shopping protection that can protect your purchases and the money you spend on them. Coverage terms and limits vary from card to card. Rather than trying to remember it all on your own, we’ll walk you through the various shopping protections offered by American Express cards.
This guide will provide a comprehensive, detailed look at the various shopping protections offered in the American Express card portfolio. Each section outlines the type of coverage and then the cards that offer this coverage. Coverage limits will also be included.
Cellphone security
Smartphones are not cheap. Cellphone protection provides coverage for stolen or damaged phones. Note that cosmetic damage and lost phones (even during shipping) are not covered.
All Amex cards with this benefit provide the same level of protection. If your phone is damaged or stolen, there is a maximum liability of $800 per claim. Each claim has a $50 deductible and coverage is limited to two claims per eligible account in a 12-month period. Covered phones are restricted to the cellphone lines listed on the mobile phone plan paid for with an eligible card during the most recent billing period.*

Extended warranty
When you use your eligible card to purchase items that come with a manufacturer’s warranty, extended warranty protection can add an additional year to this warranty. Coverage applies to warranties of five years or less.
All Amex cards with this benefit provide the same level of protection. Extended warranty coverage is up to the actual amount charged to your card for the item with a maximum of $10,000. There is an annual limit of $50,000 per Card Member account in a calendar year.*

With return protection, American Express can refund up to $300 of the full purchase price per item (excluding shipping and handling) and up to a maximum of $1,000 per calendar year per card account. To be eligible, you must pay for the item in full with your eligible American Express card, and purchases must be made in the US or its territories.*
