Even if you’re traveling to some of the best places in the southern United States, you’ll still be able to visit some incredible places in Mississippi. It is a wonderful state to explore.

So, to help you maximize your time in Mississippi, I’m sharing the top spots you won’t want to miss. You’re going to have an amazing trip visiting the Mississippi – it’s truly amazing.

1.) Gulf Islands National Seashore

The Gulf Islands National Seashore extends from the eastern tip of Santa Rosa Island, Florida to Cat Island, Mississippi. It’s one of the most gorgeous stretches of Mississippi’s coastline, with some gems to discover.

2.) Tupelo

Nestled on the northeast coast of Mississippi, Tupelo is a great city to visit for an overnight stay while traveling across the state. In fact, it’s one of the best places in Mississippi to visit if you’re traveling between Memphis (in Tennessee) and Birmingham in Alabama via Highway 22.

Once you are here, be sure to visit Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum. Here, you can explore the life of Elvis Presley, which, after visiting Graceland, was a must-see for me.

You see, Elvis was born in this two-room house built by his father on January 8, 1935. He still feels what this house looked like almost 90 years ago. It’s surreal.

Afterwards, take a trip to nearby Elvis Presley Lake. It is a gorgeous area, quite close to the city and perfect for a stroll.

For a bite to eat, head over Auntie Bee’s Soul Food Restaurant. It’s a casual spot for lunch and their catfish is the best in town.

3.) Vicksburg National Military Park

Near the state’s border with Louisiana, the USS Cairo Gunboat and Museum An incredible place to visit if you are interested in military history.

After a massive restoration effort to save the USS Cairo, the USS Cairo Museum has become a must-see for the Civil War-era gunship. It is quite incredible to think about the history of the Civil War and learn more about it. From an international perspective, it was an eye-opener.

4.) Indianola

Indianola is a relatively small town, but still a great place to visit for a few hour trip to Mississippi. You see, those are some great places to while away the morning commute, especially Bibi King Museum.

The B.B. King Museum shows you everything you need to know about one of the most iconic blues artists of all time. Which, of course, is BB King.

Afterwards, if you’re driving across the state border with Louisiana, be sure to stop at Greenville (a 30-minute drive from Indianola). Specifically, you’re going to close Do’s It PlaceIt has been running since 1940. Their porterhouse and ribeye steaks are some of the best in the state!

5.) Biloxi

On the coast, north of Cat Island is Biloxi. It’s a coastal city with a lot of charm (and humidity at times) that’s great for a few day trips. Plus, you can partner up for a tour of Biloxi and the greater Gulf Island area. It is very beautiful.

While here, be sure to visit Beauvoir mansion and the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library. Has a rich history in selling and transferring estates; Today, it is the period for the only Confederate president, Jefferson Davis, and the Confederate soldiers.

Afterwards, head to Biloxi Beach for a day in the surf. Its white sandy shores are beautiful and the perfect spot for a beach day in Biloxi.

6.) Natchez Trace Parkway

If you’re on a road trip through Mississippi, you should definitely drive part of it Natchez Trace Parkway. It is over 400 miles long and is a wonderful way to explore the state’s extensive history.

As you head north beyond the Mississippi, you’ll stop at several places. The road here has been used in some capacity for thousands of years, and is a spectacular drive.

Just make sure you plan your stops wisely and find hotels. Some areas are rural, so it’s best to arrange accommodation before you depart.

7.) Ocean springs

Just shy of Biloxi, Ocean Springs is another stunning small town to visit while driving the Gulf Route around southern Mississippi.

The town of Ocean Springs, with its many art studios and shops, is a safe haven for crafters and artists—or those who want a quiet little town for a day trip.

Also, if you have time, be sure to explore Ocean Springs Beach. It’s quieter than some of Mississippi’s more popular beaches and just as beautiful.

8.) Mississippi Petrified Forest

A 30-minute drive from Jackson, the Mississippi Petrified Forest It is one of the best places in Mississippi to visit if you are interested in geology and natural history. Petrified forest is millions of years old.

Once here, you can explore the area through nature trails and visit a museum that tells the turbulent history of present-day Mississippi. It is very eye opening.

Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, Natchez is a small town big on charm.

Once here, be sure to visit Rosalie Mansion and Gardens To explore the broader history of western Mississippi. Oh, and be sure to visit Stanton Hallwhich dates back to the 1800s. You can go inside and explore the hall and all its period furniture and history. It is incredible.

11.) Jackson

In the heartland of the state, Jackson, for me, is one of the best places to visit for a city break in Mississippi. You see, you can easily spend 2-3 days here and still not explore it all. There are heaps to do.

After arriving in Jackson, be sure to visit Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. It is sad and harrowing, and its history is absolutely necessary for all of us to remember. You can easily spend a few hours learning all about the struggles for rights.

Also, don’t forget to walk around JacksonCheck out the Governor’s mansion and pop in Mississippi Museum of Art. The latter is a great place to see the work of international artists and local artists, which changes seasonally Throughout the year.

12.) Gulfport

Adjacent to the city of Biloxi, Gulf Port is a large, western stretch of coastline in Mississippi. It’s actually beautiful and the beaches here are some of the best in all of Mississippi. However, during the holidays, they can get a bit busy – so be prepared for a bit of a crowd.

Heading to a Gulf port with kids? Then pop in Lynn Meadows Discovery Center. The treehouse and exhibits are great fun for the little ones and you could easily spend a few hours here.

Hungry? Head on Ben’s Deli For their delicious po’boys. It is very nice and quite tasty. Just be aware, we found they didn’t take cards when we arrived, so be sure to take some cash with you.
