Leaving Little Petra, we headed to Petra with a stop-off for lunch, because when we get back to Petra we will find a viewpoint that we have seen many times in photos and videos (before coming to Petra).
As obvious as the viewpoint looked, we had no idea how to find it and so, armed with photos of it, we hired a local guide to try to lead us there.
Our guide was a teenage boy who knew this whole place like the back of his hand.
He soon led us past these huge boulders making our way to the top of the hill above Petra.
The higher we climbed, the scarier it got, and by the time we reached the viewpoint, with the carpet laid out before us, my fear of heights was in full overdrive.
I still don’t know what possessed us to go ahead and take this photo at the viewpoint because after we did, we just realized how ridiculously unsafe it was.
There are other viewpoints like this that are very down and easy to reach but this one here is just ridiculous.
It’s quite a drop, and our advice would definitely be for you to avoid doing it.
Plus, the view from the bottom is more impressive anyway.
Once we finished here, we retraced our steps back to where we came up the valley, but instead of going down, we went around to check out other parts of Petra that we might have missed.
There was one more hiccup as we moved up the opposite side of where we were, but after that, everything else was pretty straight forward.
And by straightforward, I don’t mean simple.
You are still hiking in the mountains but at least there was nothing that triggered our fear of heights.
The landscape here is absolutely gorgeous by the way and you get a different appreciation for Petra from here.
You’ll also see a lot of formations that you’d definitely miss if you just stuck to the bottom path, although with that said, there are definitely a lot less scary ways to find your way here (like the way we went back down here Found a better option to go up and also came with stairs).
Finally, we decided to stop for a while to soak up the sun, starting to sink slowly into a small hut found at the top.
Also, full disclosure, the reason we were okay with drinking tea and coffee this way is because it’s boiled and piping hot which eliminates any concern we otherwise have about the source of the water.
Also, it’s worth noting that none of us had stomach issues after drinking any of these teas so you can make whatever you want. Hehe!
After our tea, we started on the easiest part of the hike so far, the journey down.
I know a lot of people don’t really like downhill hiking but it’s one of my favorite things to do.
Hiking uphill I struggle with and would be the slowest of any group (I think I need to take my time with that one a bit more) but downhill?
Oh, I’d be the fastest guy in any group. Hehe!
This would actually be our last day of the trip in Petra before we left for the desert the next day and so we had to take some time when we got to the bottom to see the beauty of Petra at sunset.
Somehow, what was supposed to be a relaxing day turned out to be one of the most active days ever and certainly the most rewarding as we uncovered aspects of this ancient lost kingdom that we might have otherwise missed. otherwise on.
Eventually, we made our way back to the entrance through the incredible canyon where we found a bar to toast to how amazing Petra was.
See you in Wadi Rum in the next post.
This is a place that you already know but you don’t know it because you’ve seen it in Hollywood movies.
But, like I said, more on that in the next post. 😁😁
