Earlier this year, it was announced that the iconic Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu’s North Shore in Hawaii would be transformed into the Ritz-Carlton. Points and miles enthusiasts cheered the news because it meant the new Hawaii property would be integrated into the Marriott Bonvoy.

That day has come, and the Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay, can finally be booked with Marriott Bonvoy points.

Currently, award nights are available across the calendar for 132,000 points per night.

Currently, cash rates at the Ritz-Carlton Resort fluctuate dramatically throughout the year. Low rates for 2024 – which are mainly in the week leading up to Christmas – come in at $665 per night, but skyrocket to $1,500 per night during the holidays.

But is the Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay, a good use of points? Well, it depends.

In August, TPG values Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.85 cents each, so 132,000 Marriott Bonvoy points equals $1,122. For the cheapest nights in December, you’ll pay $845.79 cash per night, plus taxes and fees. So, booking with points for those nights would cost about $276 in lost Marriott Bonvoy points.

On the other hand, the cash rate for a busy holiday week comes to a total of $1,909.81 per night, which is far more than the value of 132,000 Marriott Bonvoy points. For those nights, you’ll get a value of about 1.45 cents per Marriott Bonvoy point — significantly above TPG’s current valuation of 0.85 cents per point.

Those with Chase Ultimate Rewards points (earned through cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card) should know that Marriott Bonvoy currently has a 70% transfer bonus. Chase points normally transfer to Marriott Bonvoy at a 1:1 ratio, which becomes bonus 1.1.7, so transferring 78,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Marriott Bonvoy would convert to 132,600 — enough bay to book an award night at Turtle.

TPG currently values Chase Ultimate Rewards points at 2.05 cents each, meaning 78,000 Chase points are worth $1,599. This means you’ll still save for Christmas or New Years in Hawaii.

It is also worth noting that since the property has just been admitted to the program, these award rates may shift down; It’s not that common to see the entire booking calendar offer the same rates, especially since Marriott uses a dynamic pricing system.

Why we’re excited about The Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay

Before it was announced that Turtle Bay would become the Ritz-Carlton, We visited the resort for review. TPG Director of Content Summer Hull called the resort “the gem of Oahu’s North Shore,” and I can attest.

The property is home to a beautiful pool with some of the most spectacular ocean views I’ve ever seen — with seven different beaches within walking distance. This area is famous for its great surf. You can watch world-class surfers catch larger-than-life waves or learn how to surf in a more tame part of the ocean.

Multiple bars and restaurants keep guests full or with pina coladas on hand, and the cowboy-themed luau is not to be missed.

Other great amenities include spas, golf courses, hiking and biking trails, horseback riding opportunities, and nighttime snorkeling trips to see what lies beneath the water when the sun goes down.

Bottom line

We’ll have to wait and see if Turtle Bay’s award calendar drops with seasonal rates. However, now is definitely a great time to use your Marriott Bonvoy points or Chase Ultimate Rewards points to book a stay at a North Shore resort during busy, expensive times.

Either way, The Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay, is a fabulous resort and a great place to earn Marriott Bonvoy points on paid stays.
