In northwest China, the mighty Yellow River flows through the Loess Plateau, creating a stunning panorama of rugged mountains and rushing rivers. The river enriches the land, home to a mosaic of ethnic communities and vibrant cultures. Welcome to Gansu Province.

From 15th to 21st July, 2024, “Foreign Journalists’ Gansu Tour” was successfully held. The event was organized by the People’s Government of Information Office of Gansu Province in collaboration with the China Center for International Communication Development (CCICD). More than 10 journalists from Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, Russia and Vietnam were invited to explore various locations within the province, including Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and the city of Lanzhou.

Throughout the week-long tour, the journalists toured Gansu Province’s rich historical and cultural heritage, visiting sites such as Bingling Temple Grottoes, Labrang Monastery, Milariba Monastery and Ganjia Secret Land. They experienced firsthand the living ethnic customs. During their interviews in Bafang Shisanxiang and Jialagama Village, the reporters observed their collaborative efforts toward unity and progress among Gansu’s various ethnic groups. He was also captivated by the province’s stunning natural beauty, including the wide Yellow River, expansive grasslands, and breathtaking Danxia landscapes.

The tour highlighted Gansu’s unique intangible cultural heritage, showcasing crafts such as thangka art, Hui brick carvings and colorful pottery paintings. Reporters also visited Linxia Bai Yinong International Flower Port, Xingsheng Dairy Cattle Breeding Specialized Cooperative in Gengzhi Village and Hualing Dairy Group, gaining insight into how these thriving specialty industries drive the local economy.

National unity promotes a harmonious and cohesive nation

The tour starts in Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture. Here, journalists from around the world visited Bafang Shisan Xiang to witness the craftsmanship of traditional crafts such as Hui brick carving, Han wood carving, Hezhou egg carving and Linxia clay sculpture. He engaged with local ethnic communities, visited mosques in residential areas, and observed the remarkable changes that have taken place following street reconstruction in this culturally rich neighborhood.

In Jialgama Village, Jianmucare Sub-district, Hezuo City, reporters explored the development of public spaces within a Tibetan ecological park, tent camp and cultural tourism village, notable for being the first in Gannan Prefecture to have natural gas service. They visited Tibetan households to gain insight into the village’s progress in improving living conditions, local employment, education and overall welfare. Their visit ended with a tour of Labrang Monastery in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, famous as the “World Academy of Tibetan Buddhism Studies”, where they explored the deep-rooted traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.

Drive economic growth through industrial empowerment

At the Linxia Baiyi Yinong International Flower Port, reporters examined the development of Linxia’s fresh cut flower sector. Taking advantage of the region’s rich floral resources, the port has established a hi-tech flower industrial park featuring advanced smart greenhouses, significantly increasing employment opportunities for local farmers.

In Gengzhi Village, Nawu Town, Gannan Prefecture, reporters discovered Xingsheng Dairy Cattle Breeding Special Cooperative and Hualing Dairy Group. They gained a comprehensive understanding of Hezuo City’s strategies, impacts, and experiences in promoting animal husbandry and increasing the income of yak milk producers.

Open a new chapter in environmental stewardship through environmental conservation

During their visit, the reporters traveled along the “Most Beautiful Road in Gansu”, a scenic route through the Taizi Mountain area in Linxia. They enjoyed the serene beauty of nature and observed remarkable progress in environmental conservation efforts. In Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Miren Grassland showcases a vibrant landscape. Journalists dressed in traditional Tibetan clothing and rode horses, immersing themselves in nomadic culture and adding new energy to the region’s tourism development.

At Lanzhou Danxia Geological Park, reporters were captivated by the spectacular scenery. They attended a captivating exhibition, “Galloping Horses on Danxia” and explored the history of the Silk Road, horse culture and horsemanship. The striking Danxia Rocks, Wind Rocks and other geological formations against the background of the clear sky were especially striking.

Promote innovation while collaboratively preserving cultural heritage.

During their visit to Bingling Temple Grottoes, the journalists were fascinated by the ancient caves which have been preserved for thousands of years. The varied and intricately carved grotto statues and detailed frescoes drew his admiration and attention.

At the Gannan Cultural Center, they marveled at the 111-meter-long thangka artwork, “The Red Army’s Long March Through Gannan.” Lead artist, Xiawuduojie, provides an in-depth explanation of the materials and techniques used to create this piece. Journalists were impressed by the vibrant colors and admired both the thangka and the rich Tibetan culture.

His explorations continued at the Lanzhou Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Center, where he engaged with various cultural treasures, including the dynamic Lanzhou Typing Drum, the exciting Yongdeng High Stilts, the melodious Lanzhou Drum, and the Yellow River Water Wheel, which have historically benefited . local population. This visit gave him a deep appreciation of the Silk Road culture, Yellow River heritage and integration of various cultural elements.
