American Express is making a big move south of the border.

The issuer announced on Wednesday that it will open its fourth Centurion lounge at Mexico City International Airport (MEX) on August 1.

The new lounge will be located on the domestic side of the airport’s Terminal 1, home to Mexican carriers Volaris and Viva Aerobus.

The space will measure 8,400 square feet and offer many standard Centurion Lounge amenities, including private phone booths, an array of comfortable seating areas, a full bar and complimentary Wi-Fi.

The lounge will also offer shoe-shine services – one of the more unique features we’ve seen from the Centurion lounge network.

The lounge’s menu will be curated by chef Jonathan Gómez Luna, who was recently awarded a Michelin star for his restaurant Le Chic in Cancun.

Additionally, later this year, Luna will become the exclusive chef partner for Amex’s Centurion Lounges throughout Mexico, with three additional lounges in Mexico City and two in Monterrey.

Amex doesn’t have any photos or renderings to share of the new lounge, but we’ll update the story if and when the publisher provides them.

“We are seeing incredible demand for the Centurion Lounge in Mexico City, with the majority of our eligible Cardmembers in Mexico visiting at least one lounge during their travels. We continue to grow the global footprint of our Centurion Lounge network and offer Cardmembers premium options to start their journey. experience,” American Express Travel president Audrey Handley said in a statement.

Many of Amex’s international lounge locations were not originally branded as Centurion Lounges, but in 2021, the issuer decided to fold its entire proprietary lounge network into the Centurion Lounge brand.

As part of this announcement, Amex renovated several international spaces that were not up to the latest standards, and its new openings around the world feature Centurion Lounge design elements and amenities.

Amex operates three Centurion Lounges in Mexico City. Terminal 1 has two – one domestic side and the other international side. Terminal 2 also has a Centurion Lounge.

With this being the fourth lounge at MEX and the issuer’s second lounge in the Terminal 1 domestic area, the move should help alleviate some of the congestion.

The news is likely to be seen as a welcome boost by Amex’s premium card members. The issuer continues to invest in building a top-notch lounge network. Just last week, Amex opened the doors to the long-awaited Centurion Lounge at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) in Washington, DC.

The issuer also plans to open an outpost in the new Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). That location is expected to open in 2026.

There are no other confirmed Amex lounge openings on the horizon, but be sure to follow TPG for more updates on the Centurion Lounge network.
