The Christmas Eve journey is off to a rocky start.
American Airlines encountered a technical problem Tuesday morning, prompting the Federal Aviation Administration to issue a nationwide ground stop, the agency confirmed.
In a statement Tuesday, the Fort Worth-based carrier told TPG:
“A technical issue is affecting American flights this morning. Our teams are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and we apologize for the inconvenience to our customers.”
The disruption is likely to cause significant flight disruptions during the day on Tuesday – a day when millions more travelers are expected to flock to airports across the country.
At least 2.8 million travelers filled airports between Friday, December 20 and Sunday, December 22, according to Transportation Security Administration data. More than 2.7 million passengers arrived at the airport on Saturday.
Generally speaking, air travel went smoothly over the weekend — but Christmas Eve can be a trying day at the airport.
This is a developing story. Check back for frequent updates.
