There’s a new way to use your American Airlines AAdvantage miles for a flight to Hawaii.

This week, AAdvantage members can redeem miles for flights on Hawaiian Airlines flights between the US mainland and Hawaii.

Go to the American booking channels and you will immediately see the changes.

For instance, the longest domestic flight in the US – from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to Honolulu’s Daniel K. Hawaiian’s nonstop on a Hawaiian Airbus A330 to Inouye International Airport (HNL). In the case of this February trip, that would go up to 35,000 AAdvantage miles.

Or, here’s a one-way flight from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Honolulu for 22,500 AAdvantage miles on Hawaiian.

It’s worth noting that in both of the above itineraries (and a few others I found), only main cabin redemptions were available. So if, say, you’re hoping to use your AAdvantage miles for a business-class seat on Hawaiian’s brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliner, you’ll have to be a little flexible.

Expanding American-Hawaiian Relations

American partnerships with Hawaiians are not entirely new. The two brands previously operated a more limited loyalty tie-up that allowed American loyalists to redeem AAdvantage miles for short, interisland flights on Hawaiian.

But now officially with Hawaiian, the ties between the two carriers seem to be deepening Alaska will join forces with Airlines in the latest merger in the US airline industry. Alaska was already a full-scale partner of the Americans through the OneWorld Alliance.

Through Tuesday, AAdvantage members can redeem their miles on all flights operated by Hawaiian and booked through American’s website.

If you’re a frequent American flier, redeeming miles on flights between the US mainland and Hawaii means you’ll have more flight options to choose from.

Earnings are limited

Despite the extensive ability to redeem AAdvantage miles on Hawaiian-operated flights, significant earning limits remain on paid flights.

AAAdvantage members can earn “bonus miles” on flights sold and operated by Hawaiian. Bonus AAdvantage miles don’t come with loyalty points, which means those flights on Hawaiian still won’t help you work your way up. AAdvantage elite status.

However, with the Hawaiian brand set to join the Oneworld alliance as part of its integration into Alaska Air Group, it seems a likely bet that its relationship with American could deepen in the future.

Even if you don’t have a large amount of AAdvantage miles in your account, there’s another easy way to earn Hawaiian miles. American Express membership rewards transfer to Hawaiian at a 1:1 ratio.
