The Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association (IHLA) recently gathered industry professionals to honor outstanding individuals who make the hotel and hospitality sector in Illinois true leaders in service and innovation. The 2024 Stars of the Industry Awards recognized those who go above and beyond to create memorable experiences for guests, making Illinois a top destination for travelers.
One of the biggest honors of the night, Hotelier of the YearAwarded to Colin Challander, General Manager of Claridge House Chicago. Colin’s leadership, dedication to creating a welcoming environment and ability to elevate his team have made him a standout in the Illinois hospitality community.
Other award winners, each nominated by their peers for their significant contributions to the industry, include:
- Administrative Employee of the Year: Valeria Serrano, Hotel Arista (Naperville) – Valeria’s organizational skills and tireless dedication have helped shape Hotel Arista’s success.
- Fellow Employee of the Year: Lisa Nucci, Pick Chicago – Lisa’s collaborative spirit and efforts to promote tourism have had a lasting impact on the city’s appeal.
- Bell Staff Employee of the Year: Spiro Diamantopoulos, The Royal Sonesta Chicago River North – Spiro’s warm, welcoming presence ensures that every guest feels like a VIP when they arrive.
- Departmental Head of the Year: Sarah Baker, Eastland Suites Hotel & Conference Center (Bloomington) – Sarah’s leadership in overseeing operations has helped increase guest satisfaction rates.
- First-level supervisor of the year: Nancy Green, DoubleTree by Hilton (Bloomington) – Nancy’s exceptional ability to lead and support her team has been key to the hotel’s continued success.
- Food and Beverage Heart of the House Employee of the Year: Joshua Henry, Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel – Joshua’s passion for food and service has made him the cornerstone of the hotel’s culinary excellence.
- Food and Beverage Front of the House Employee of the Year: Beverly Christmas, Hampton Inn by Hilton (Paris) – Beverly’s bright personality and dedication to guest service set her apart as a true ambassador for the hotel.
- Guest Service Employee of the Year: Springhill Suites by Rosemary Robles, Marriott (Bolingbrook) – Rosemary’s attention to detail and genuine guest care have earned her glowing praise from guests.
- Housekeeping Employee of the Year: Shady Gergis, Eaglewood Resort & Spa (Itasca) – Shady’s meticulous approach to housekeeping ensures every guest enjoys a spotless, welcoming environment.
- Maintenance Employee of the Year: Michael “Richie” Smith, W Chicago Lakeshore – Behind the scenes, Richie’s dedication to keeping the hotel running smoothly is a key part of the guest experience.
- Manager of the Year: Willie Clay, Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile – Willie’s commitment to leadership and staff development has made him a beloved figure at Marriott.
- Mixologist of the Year: Adam Chase, Adorn Bar & Restaurant at the Four Seasons Chicago – Adam’s creative cocktails and mastery of mixology have made the bar a must-visit spot in Chicago.
- Security Officer of the Year: Dinelia Smiles, The Palmer House, a Hilton Hotel – Dinelia’s calm and reassuring presence ensures that guests feel safe and cared for during their stay.
The evening also recognized several special properties for their achievements, including:
- Community Service Property of the Year: Four Seasons Hotel Chicago – The Four Seasons’ ongoing community outreach and philanthropic efforts have positively impacted countless lives.
- Durability property of the year: Hotel Arista (Naperville) – Hotel Arista’s commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices has set an example for the entire industry.
- Strategic Partner of the Year: Pepsi – Pepsi’s support and collaboration with Illinois hotels has helped enhance the guest experience across the state.
